As far as concerts go, solid double-billing shows are hard to come by these days. My best last was ‘The Strokes’ / ‘White Stripes’ up in NYC at Carnegie Hall… and lawdy, it was good. Coming this Monday 3/23/09 at The Lyric, I feel we’ve got one worthy of a loud shout-out. Heartless Bastards & Andrew Bird. A yen and yang show. Rough, stripped down, gritty, melodic blues from Heartless; and concise, precise, whistle-stomping alt-rock from Andrew. Great stuff. For most concerts, you grab a late bite to eat...

It all made sense when I got the watch. My grandfather, Lamont Henry, was the team physician for the Georgia Tech football team back in the 60′s and 70′s, and he accompanied the team to several bowl games throughout the years. And with bowl games, obviously, came schwag. Free goodies. Wristwatches were one of the goodies he collected. And he had several. Sun Bowl 1970. Gator Bowl 1960. Peach Bowl 1971. After he sadly passed in 1999, these same watches were passed down, and began to distribute through the family line. As I was born...

Background machinations in the Oxford Bar scene have been interesting these last few months. In January, the Parrish Baker Pub, owned and operated by Parrish Baker, became Taylor’s Pub, owned and operated by Jason Plunk (previous owner of Night Town Billiards). Without needless detail, it’s clear that Taylor’s has tried to stay true to the Parrish’s vibe – the look hasn’t changed drastically, food’s the same, and so are a number of the staff. Tonight happens to be the last night for the Jubilee...

What’s not to love, really. They’ve been my saving grace today. My command station for all things OxfordMississippi.com. The place to retreat in between projects. The place to people watch. The place to breathe free wifi. The place to re-caffeinate. The place with a better music rotation than Rebel Radio. The place to run into friends. The place to relax. (And the place where I’m writing this post). I’ve occupied four different spots in here today, in my coming and goings. And the more I’m here, the more I marvel...

Oxford Time Machine (aka. OTM) highlights ‘then-and-now’ photos of the surrounding community. It’s a hobby project of ours : ) Home was built by August Baldwin Longstreet, who was second Chancellor of the University of Mississippi, and also Father in law of L.Q.C. Lamar. The house was originally a one-story frame house, but later expanded to include a second story and large...

The MDP at Ole Miss (Media & Documentary Project) is featuring some outstanding promotional pieces for the University – pieces which seemed darn suitable for us to mention here… and also, (since I’m a Bill Ferris protégé, documentary film hack, and dropout from the film business in Los Angeles) I felt obligated to include … here are two I enjoyed.. more are included on the MDP...
