Pointers for the 2008 Ole Miss Freshman Class

Posted by on Aug 14, 2008 in Ole Miss | 0 comments

It’s that time again…pretty soon moving trucks and parents will be pouring in the little town of Oxford to kiss their high school graduates goodbye. I figured since I’ve been there before, I’d give the fresh meat (or freshmen), a few pointers. There is no good time to move into the dorm. It is going to be hot and packed. Everyone is dying to get into his or her new room and out of their parent’s hair. I believe, the later you move in, the better. The elevators will be packed and only half of them will be working,...

Our Biased 2008 Ole Miss Football Prediction

Posted by on Aug 11, 2008 in Ole Miss | 10 comments

As these August doldrums drip by, our beloved Ole Miss football season sits on the horizon, motioning for us to “hold tight”. And we are. Patiently. But we can’t help but write the entire season before it even starts. Pre-play each game well before kickoff, pre-celebrate, pre-everything. And since we’re receiving no love from USA Today or SI for ’08, we thought we share our little internal FYI for the upcoming season, and how we see things playing out. Plus some trash talking thrown in. Memphis aka,...

Play Blues Like RL and Junior (Kinda)

Posted by on Aug 2, 2008 in Mississippi | 0 comments

One of several blessings I received during my tenure at Ole Miss, was the immersion into Mississippi hill country blues. The good stuff. Actually, make that, the great stuff. Unrefined, gritty, beautiful, and full of life. RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough were stewards in my introduction. And to this day, I can’t seem to shake my infatuation with their sound. Sounds, like this: Sounds that’d I’d love to try and emulate … only if I played an instrument. And I’m sad to say I don’t. (but that will...

The Sad State of The Gin

Posted by on Jul 16, 2008 in Oxford | 26 comments

Some call it the best bar in the history of Oxford. and I’ll concur. which is why it’s a damn shame (pardon my French) cause it’s been so neglected these days. So neglected, we felt inclined to share it’s sad state with everybody… We should pool some cash together and buy this landmark… Or, alternatively, we should convince the Mayor to designate this a historical building, and save it from the wrecking ball. Too many history inside those walls.. photo credit: Derek Moreton (mucho props) If you’ve got...

Oxford Train Depot [OTM]

per the Ole Miss ‘Oxford Train Depot Restoration‘ site: The University of Mississippi purchased the depot in 1983. In 1992, the university successfully lobbied to have the depot declared a Mississippi Landmark, the highest honor that the State can bestow upon a property. After many attempts by citizens, tourism experts, and developers to breathe new life into the depot, the university secured a grant of $800,000 from the Mississippi Department of Transportation in the summer of 2001. With an additional $200,000 in matching funds,...

Introducing: The Lyric Theatre

Posted by on Jul 11, 2008 in Oxford | 1 comment

By way of my Facebook invitation list, I can tell that the Lyric Oxford is starting to add more and more names to their newly founded music venue. If you have a Facebook page, then you should definitely befriend The Lyric. The other day, my friend and I peeked through the unlocked doors at the black and white decorated walls. She just loved the walls and then expressed her need and absolute desire to have her wedding reception there, might I add, she is not near being engaged. The word on the street is that there are already many...
