Alternative Study Spots During Finals

Posted by on May 6, 2008 in Ole Miss | 1 comment

Something a little apropos for Exam Week: First, a lesson in misleading terminology: A) Dead Week = The week before finals, when professors are supposed to be gracious and not assign any work, as to give you time to study for the inevitable test of the semester. B) Exam Week = Literally translated. Apparently these two terms are interchangeable, as I have already completed my Mass Media Law exam (intense as it sounds), and my social life is the only thing that is dead. So, here’s to all of you who have yet to learn the art of studying, are...

thought I’d share a few of the small video clips I grabbed during the Double Decker Festival last weekend.. (I was perched up on the deck of Square Books, taking a break as the day was winding down. ) Each clip runs around 10 seconds.. (even got a quick clip of the Avett Brothers) and if you didn’t get a chance to drop by, or have never had the chance, don’t pass it up next year..It was loads of fun… until then,...

Mmm… Breakfast

Posted by on May 1, 2008 in Restaurants & Bars | 1 comment

I sit here, at my kitchen table fantasizing about what breakfast spot to hit tomorrow morning, all while realizing that I am probably not going to make it up early enough (Double Decker is tonight) and end up having to eat at Huddle House along with the rest of the college kids who have either rolled out of bed, or have yet to visit their houses from a night of partying. But I still sit here fantasizing and thinking, maybe next weekend I can hit one of these amazing spots. I mean, it’s not like I didn’t get to frequent one this very...

I like Oxford because …

Posted by on Apr 28, 2008 in Oxford | 2 comments

I went to a literal one-room schoolhouse, Christian academy that somehow landed us an English teacher with a master’s degree from Oxford University (the one in England) who swore against almost all “because” usage. So starting this column off with “I like Oxford, Mississippi because…” is against my conditioned nature, and part of me fears that she is somewhere out there, in one Oxford or another, waiting to read this and cringe with disappointment. Anyway, I like Oxford, Mississippi BECAUSE I can write however I’d like. A little...

Oxford Has Some Weird Laws…

Posted by on Apr 25, 2008 in Law & Politics | 2 comments

No cold beer. Keg registration. No fortunetellers or clairvoyants. Weird!!! As an adult transplant to Oxford (I moved here to attend law school and stayed) one of my first surprises was the unavailability of cold beer at a convenience store. As a college student in Oklahoma, I had become accustomed to picking up a cold six pack before a ball game or on a hot windy (Mississippians have no idea!) afternoon. Come to find out, not only is Oxford beer peddled hot, it can’t be peddled at all on Sundays. Over the years I have had many...

My First Oxford Visit

Posted by on Apr 22, 2008 in Oxford | 0 comments

I started thinking today about the first time I visited Oxford. I had to pause for a moment, actually, to remember when it actually occurred (my Mom helped me remember, I admit it). It was March of 1988. My junior year, high school spring break. Amazingly 20 years ago.. oye. I had narrowed my college choices down at that point, and Ole Miss was in the top three. When we decided to drop by for a visit, USM was so close, we opted to fly into Jackson so we could visit both campus’. Hattiesburg was the first stop. As we initially entered the...

In addition to articles and stories, we’ll also be posting local photos in and around the Oxford area. In no specific order, really. Just neat shots that capture the essence of the city.   W00t to Derek Moreton, our in-house resident photographer, for grabbing this great shot of the Grove, as well as the famous 18 MPH sign. photo credit: Derek...
