On July 13th, Former Mayor of Oxford, Mississippi, Richard Howorth was sworn in to serve a 5 year spot as a Tennessee Valley Authority board member. For those of you not familiar with TVA – they are a U.S. government owned corporation that covers over 80,000 square miles of land in 6 states with a population of over 9 million people.

Howorth is no stranger to this sort of thing. As mayor, he served as chairman of the Oxford Electric Department. He also serves as director and officer of the NMIDA or North Mississippi Industrial Development Association for 8 years.

It is always great to see Oxford, MS residents doing big things and going on to do meet even greater challenges.

Tom Franklin’s new novel Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter introduced me to a character that I will always remember, Larry Ott.  I think the thing that defines a great book for me is a character (or characters) that I care about.  If a book doesn’t have a character in it that I give a damn about, I’m not going to give a damn about the book.  Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter made me care about Larry Ott.  It’s one of those books that made me want to read it again as soon as I finished.

Yokna Bottoms CSA.  A year ago, I didn’t know who Doug Davis or Daniel and Alison Doyle were.  Today I can say our community is much better off because of them.  We had been in need of a good CSA for a while, and boy was that need filled.  As with

This Tuesday, Vox returns to the Powerhouse with the dynamic duo of Neil White and Louis Bourgeois presenting their memoirs. Music by the Yodeling Anarcho-Syndacalists. Red beans and rice and wine from West Jackson Wine and Spirits will be consumed. As always, this VOX event is free.  Food and wine for small donation.
