Are you getting tired of fried catfish, sweet potato fries, and pulled pork sandwiches? Of course not, but this article is sure to get your taste buds roaring for something sweet while you’re on the square.

Holly’s Sweet Tooth

Even businessmen can’t resist stepping out of their law offices and insurance agencies for a trip to Holli’s. You’ll see them wrangling for control of the candy bins along with Oxford Middle School students and Phi Mus.

As you see with Waldo up above, there is a diverse assortment of sugary delicacies available for one and all. The M&M’s kiosk contains almost every color you could imagine from Orange, Dark Pink, and Aqua Green to the more well-known colors too. To the upper left of Waldo is a line-up of Jelly Bellies ranging from Dr. Pepper, Sizzling Cinnamon, and Toasted Marshmallow.

Chocolate banana chips, dark chocolate cashews, and even wasabi peas complement the vivid, eye-popping gummy bears and 10-dollar Jaw Breakers in the image below.

However they do have strict yet charming instructions on choosing your candy:

“Once the candy has left its home inside the candy bins and into your bags it CANNOT be put back…..it loves you now and wants to be in your tummy.”

Besides candies they also have various shakes and smoothies as well as a “Brownie Madness,” which is a brownie, a scoop of Bluebell Ice Cream, pecans, and caramel and chocolate sauces. You can even grab a slice of Coconut, Red Velvet, or Chocolate cake shipped in from Sugaree’s bakery in New Albany, MS, amongst other selections like ice cream sandwiches and banana pecan bread.

They also have daily specials such as “Milk Shake Mondays”, “Waffle Cone Wednesdays”, and “Saturday Sundaes.”

Holli’s is only a short walk away from Soulshine Pizza on Lamar Ave.

BottleTree Bakery

The top of the menus at BottleTree Bakery declare that “Two days is required to yield one day of product.” Let me tell you that this is not your grocery store’s Wonder Bread that’ll last for at least a week. The employees declare that their specially baked treats are made “the way bread should be.”

The blueberry muffins, apple brioche, and blueberry humble pies are all made through an old school method called “proofing.” This process involves allowing the dough to rise naturally at the end of the fermentation period. Absolutely no preservatives are used in their yeast, which is okay by them since most of their stock sells out by noon, or earlier.

These pastries are made from produce purchased at local farmers markets like Boyd Farms and Old Tyme Farms.

The menu descriptions alone are tempting enough with their scones made with Australian crystallized ginger, the brioche made with a sweet yeast dough, and homemade poppy seed bagels amongst many others.

BottleTree Bakery also serve soups like butternut squash, and sandwiches like their BottleTree club with Creole mustard.

They are open from 7:30 to 2:30 pm every day except Sunday, when they close at 2 pm. They’re always closed on Mondays.

Ya Ya’s Frozen Yogurt

Couples will congregate here after a meal at City Grocery along with students who will line up for a treat in between study breaks. It’s also a lighter option for those who want to avoid loosening their belts.

Ya Ya’s is a part of the trend where customers can choose how much yogurt they want, as well as what topping you can choose to put on it. It’s all completely self-serve! When you’re done, someone will weigh your treat and charge you by the ounce.

There’s even a sign with the “Superstar Of The Week” which at the time of this writing includes a person who ordered 22.8 ounces of yogurt!

Many flavors are fat free and low fat with the original “Tart” flavor coming in at only 25 calories an ounce. Other flavors include vanilla, chocolate, gooey cinnamon bun, raspberry, wild strawberry, and salted caramel.

To the right of the yogurt dispensing machines is a buffet with options like snicker doodle bites, lucky charms, and blueberries along with many, many others. There is also a wide range of sauces that include mango, white chocolate, and peanut butter.

Besides yogurt, they also sell fruit smoothies which include “Colada Day Dreamer” with coconut and pineapple; “Mango In The Moon” with mango, pineapple, and strawberry; as well as “Ya Ya’s Surprise” with 3 fruits of your choice, although I’m not sure how that’s a surprise.

Ya Ya’s is open from 11am-10pm except for Fridays and Saturdays when they extend their hours to 11pm. Sunday hours are 12pm to 9pm.

If you happen to be outside the square, you can also check out Bop’s, the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, and Twisters Yogurt all located on West Jackson Ave.

We didn’t even get a chance to mention some of the desserts at the various restaurants! But that’s another story entirely.

Do you have any favorite dessert items you’d like to tell us about?

“Tell the boy with the ‘hate state’ shirt that he’s not welcome back here!” is what a girl posted on my friend’s FaceBook wall. This was after I had failed to convince her earlier that this shirt I wore, mentioning how state fans entertain themselves by cowtipping on Saturday nights, was just something I put on.

She wasn’t having it because her ego was hurt, and since it probably was a little bit true! The self-image each alma mater has inherited from the past has influenced how both Ole Miss and MS State battle each other on, and off the field.

That shirt touched upon the insecurity many state fans have that their school’s focus on agriculture, engineering, and mechanics is not as snazzy as our focus on law, medicine, accounting, or pharmacy.

And their fans like to nibble on our overinflated sense of superiority by pointing out how difficult it is to wear a seersucker in a MS heat wave, as well as our team’s record. This difference is mostly due to Ole Miss refusing to have agricultural or mechanical studies in order to maintain it’s elite status.

It leads to a lot of mostly friendly fun with jokes like:

Do you know why the Mississippi State football team should change its name to the “Possums”? Because they play dead at home, and get killed on the road.

How many Bulldogs does it take to screw in a light bulb? One, but he gets 3 credit hours.

What do you call a good-looking girl on the Mississippi State campus? A visitor.

What does the average Mississippi State student get on his SAT? Drool. (find more at http://www.zaneszeros.com/?p=3969)

All of us love to take any opportunity to flaunt our snobbery in front of our friends further down south. “People like to tease them about the cowbells (rung by Bulldog fans at home games), and they get real mad about that,” says Mississippi chancellor Robert Khayat, who played for the Rebels from 1957-59. “It has always been a rural-against-city rivalry. It’s funny, though. Mississippi is mostly rural. There isn’t too much that’s cosmopolitan about the state.” (http://www.athlonsports.com/college-football/college-footballs-great-rivalries-ole-miss-vs-mississippi-state)

Other factors besides each other’s psychological makeup has gotten tangled into the rivalry. It actually started with a riot in 1926 after our fans celebrated a win on their turf by tearing down their goal posts. The players just stood by the field and watched the royal rumble after Ole Miss won 7-6.

Then years later, Johnny Vaught became head coach and lost to the bulldogs twice, while he defeated them 22 times total. The 17 year win streak against the Bulldogs only helped extend the passions of each side.

Nowadays the rivalry has taken the form of irking Oxford citizens by posting an “Our State” billboard on Jackson Avenue, and taunting state fans on Facebook over losses to Alabama and Texas A&M. You’re also bound to see flags, rugs, or even license plates proclaiming a family has been divided by loyalties to either Ole Miss or MS State.

The rivalry has always been a source of entertainment for us all. My earliest memory is of two male cheerleaders from each school duking it out on the football field at a game.

At that same game, two state fans had wandered into an Ole Miss section at Vaught Hemingway waving a sign basically saying “Go State!” My out of control little bro proceeds towards them and swats down the sign, and quickly runs away before they see who did it!

So how do you push a state fan’s buttons?

Ask them how much their jean shorts cost and where they got them.

Give them some tips on cowtipping, or suggestions for other classy activities only Ole Miss folks do.

Investigate why they couldn’t get into Ole Miss, if they went to college.

When you encounter one of their fans wearing a “Hail State” shirt, yell Roll Tide! (They lost badly to Alabama)

You may be more creative than I am, but that should provide enough fun for you all!

When the doctor told Kenneth Lacy that he was an inch away from being a diabetic, he remembered his dad who died of a stroke. The chance of not being able to walk to Vaught Hemingway anymore, or meeting the same fate as his father, inspired Kenneth to toss the sweet tea, and take his first run at Lamar Park in a very long time.

“It was like I was carrying around 3 or 4 bowling balls, he said. “The first day I barely made the loop, and I hobbled back to the car.

Instead of starting his day off with a 5:30 am run, his day used to start with breakfast at Wendy’s, a quick break from his music store, Austin’s Music, for lunch at another of the fast food joints on Jackson avenue, and then something to go on the way back home.

Many Oxonians can’t stand the thought of giving up fried chicken tenders, green bean casseroles, or hush puppies. However Kenneth didn’t even entertain the idea that switching to no carbs and water would be tough.

“My doctor told me that I was a 5.8 on a 6.0 scale for having diabetes. I decided right then and there that I would not have it.”

We live in a place where obesity is the norm, at least if you relied on statistics alone. Here, “organic” and “low calorie” foods are discussed as frequently as our favorite MS state football players.

This may be what’s caused the strange reactions his mother and friends have had to his new appearance in the 16 weeks since he lost 68.5 pounds. Before he was a size 40 in the waist and weighed 225 pounds.

Two or three people asked him, “You ain’t ill are ya?” Another friend told him about how his son looked sick after doing what he did.

However the exact opposite happened after only two weeks. The doctor told him he no longer had to take his high blood pressure pills anymore. It was 14 years ago that he started taking them, around the age of 40.

“If I would have known that all I had to do was cut out carbs and sugar, I would have stopped taking those pills. I wish I would have known that was what was causing the symptoms the pill helped alleviate.”

Shopping at the local Kroger now consists of checking every label for sugar or carbohydrates. It’s yet another habit he’s picked up along with his early 3-4 mile runs, which he can also run non-stop now.

“The deal is making up your mind that you want to be healthy. To start thinking about what you put in your body.”

The only uncomfortable part of losing the bowling balls is abstaining from the food at his church’s potluck dinners, and resisting the temptation to eat his mother’s home cooked meals.

“I can’t walk in my mother’s house without her trying to feed me!”

None of it has been enough to make him try to stop his efforts to slim up. Although he still has 14 pounds to go he says, he is very happy to have lost an average of 5 pounds per week.

Hugh Freeze was named the Ole Miss Rebels new head coach for the 2012 season. Hugh has already started getting acquainted with the football team and there are a lot of happy Rebel fans ready to see what may come of the 2012 season.

I wanted to do a sort of rank and review of what I believe are the most affordable and top ranked restaurants in Oxford. I love everything from fried food to Indian cuisine and have eaten at just about every restaurant in Oxford, Mississippi.

If you have a favorite, please chime in! If you have a suggestion of what to order at any of these restaurants….please chime in!!

7. Ajax

Ajax has always been a local favorite. When you are looking for good country cookin’, Ajax is the way to go. My personal favorite dish their is their turkey and dressing. You may be surprised to know that their steaks are great as well! www.ajaxdiner.net

6. Volta Taverna

Volta’s is a great restaurant with a tasty greek cuisine. The food here is wonderful! The Pita and Hummus or the pita and pimento cheese appetizer is a great way to start your meal. I STRONGLY suggest the lamb and beef gyro. I usually hold the tzatziki sauce because I really want to taste the flavor of the meat. Don’t forget the Traditional Greek Salad! www.voltataverna.com

5. The Taco Shop

The Taco shop, located on University Avenue right behind Oby’s is a hidden gem! As most Mexican restaurants do, The Taco shop serves you chips and salsa. This batch of chips and salsa is like nothing that you have ever had in Oxford. They deep fry corn tortilla’s until they are golden brown, throw a dash of sea salt on the chips fresh out of the pan and then serve you up some green or red salsa. It’s your choice! Go with the green salsa. It’s the better of the two in my opinion. The red salsa uses chili peppers I believe and it’s “black pepper hot”. You CAN NOT go wrong with the Tacos. The beef or chicken tacos are great and if you are feeling a little on the wild side, go with the Tongue Taco. I think it’s actual beef tongue…Nooootttt really sure. I have had it. It’s….different. Every taco is served with fresh diced onions and crisply cut cilantro. Give this place a try if you haven’t already! (No Website Available)

4. Mink’s on the Park

This cool little restaurant is located at 904 College Hill Rd. right at the three way stop coming off of McElroy. You may have never heard of Mink’s on the Park. It has a great atmosphere with wi-fi. You will walk in and see people on their computers and ipads, enjoying a nice cup of coffee and some AWESOME food. You will find some aweseome sandwiches. I had the “Sweet Virginia” when I visited for the first time and it SOLD me. The “Sweet Virginia” consists of Maple Glazed Honey Ham, Oven Gold Turkey, Baby Swiss Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Vidalia Onion, and Honey Mustard….Amazing. Click Here to See Their Facebook Page

3.Kabuki

If I were basing the ranks on Customer Service alone, Kabuki would win #1 HANDS DOWN among ANY restaurant in Oxford. Their staff is very friendly their food is very very good as well. It is by far my #1 choice for Japanese food. You are first greeted by a friendly server and then they make you feel at home by bringing you a small sample of an appetizer, on the house. The Cherry Blossom Roll is a great sushi roll with a great presentation and an even better taste! You will never go wrong with their Hibachi Grill. If you get the chance, ask for Agoes. He’s a nice fella with some cool tricks up his sleeve. Sometimes they will finish your meal off with some dessert saki (also on the house). They have awesome Miso and Clear Soup. I always get the clear soup. GREAT FOOD!!! www.kabukigourmet.com

2. Maharaja

My wife and I have been a lot of places and tried some wonderful Indian food, from The West Indies to Birmingham Alabama, we have come across some pretty amazing places. I have yet to find a restaurant with the flavor that Maharaja brings to the table. The food is remarkable. We love to start our meal off with the Chicken 65 and an order of naan bread. We love spicy food and the Chicken 65 is amazing if you like spicy food. They use a sort of chili garlic paste for the appetizer. The naan bread has a nice buttery flavor with a chewy texture. For dinner, I usually get the Chicken Vindaloo and my wife goes for the Chicken Korma. You HAVE to top off the meal with a mango lassi and tell Madhu (co-owner and head server) and Ragu (chef) I said hello for me would ya!? (No Website Available)

1. Boure

Boure is a great cajun style restaurant with some wonderfuly food. Personally, my first choice would be Maharaja and then Kabuki but Boure is a crowd favorite and has a broader spectrum of customers. Boure has a great atmosphere located just off the square on North Lamar and will soon be moving across the street from Ajax. One thing that Boure has from the bar that is OUTSTANDING is their Bloody Mary. They offer three amazing appetizers. The Crabmeat Au Gratin, Sausage and Cheese Plate, and the New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp. You could be full and satisfied after just snacking on these three dishes! If you want to go the salad route, Boure offers a wonderful Cobb Salad and a Spinach Steak Salad. If you are looking for something a little more filling, go with the 16 ounce Ribeye, or Boure’ Shrimp and Grits. I named a lot of food because it’s all amazing! Click Here For Boure’s Site
