The HoustonNutt.com Pickle

By Peter Askew | May 1, 2008

Quick question, don’t peek.

If you typed HoustonNutt.com into your browser, where would you go?

Houston Nutt’s bio page maybe? Or possibly the Ole Miss football site? right?

wrong.

You go to the Arkansas sports website, HogWired.com. And you go there cause Arkansas still owns the domain name.

“Well, why doesn’t Ole Miss own this name?? Or better yet, why doesn’t Houston own it?”

that’s what I’ve been asking myself since November of 2007.

“Eh, that’s no big deal.. who cares, really, right?”

Well, consider this..

You wanna know what I’d do if I worked in the Arkansas Athletic department, and had a severe dislike of our beloved Houston?

I’d contract out a few web design professionals, and have them photoshop him every way to Sunday - him wearing a bonnet and licking a lollipop, him in diapers crying, him giving Michael Vick a high 5 during a dog fighting event, the list goes on and on. Then I’d simply forward all the HoustonNutt.com traffic to a site featuring those photos. And for the short term, there wouldn’t be a darn thing Ole Miss or Houston could do.

“Um, that’s not good. Is there something they can do, Peter?”

Well, yes there is. If you didn’t know already, there’s a reference system online called Whois, which provides domain name owner contact information. Actually, it does more than that. It’ll tell you who the registrant is, who’s the admin contact, and who’s the technical contact as well.

And here’s what Whois tells us for HoustonNutt.com:

Registrant:
University of Arkansas
Matt Shanklin
Broyles Athletic Center
Fayetteville, AR 72703
Email:shanklin@uark.edu

Administrative Contact:

Fayetteville, AR 72702
Phone: +1.4795752751

Chris Corke

Springdale, AR 72764
Phone: 501-750-3999

alls someone has to do is call or email one of these jokers, kindly asking them to transfer the domain to an Ole Miss account, so we control it. Or better yet, to Houston Nutt’s domain account, as he’s the rightful owner.

“What if they refuse, or act stupid?”

Then we slap a UDRP on them, and force them to give us the name.

Am I overreacting? nah, I don’t think so. Domains are the darn real estate of the internet. And in my opinion, we gotta get this name in house.

And really, do we wanna wait for someone over there to have the same bad idea I had?
