Two Days In The Life: The Oxford Beatles Shows

By Derek Moreton | January 30th, 2009

On February 5th and 6th Proud Larry’s will host the fundraiser “Two Days In The Life: The Oxford Beatles Shows” featuring over fifty local artists covering their favorite Beatles tunes. Chico HarrisThe show is the brainchild of Chico Harris, founder of Oxford Town, The Local Voice, and – coincidentally – onetime owner of the domain name OxfordMississippi.com. Harris began the tribute last year (“A Day In The Life”) to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of John Lennon and Paul McCartney meeting each other and as a way to promote Oxford musicians and a burgeoning Oxford music scene.

posterBands like Duff Dorrough, Pithecanfunkus Erectus, Colour Revolt, Shannon McNally, The Eric Deaton Trio, Rocket 88, Dent May and Johnny Freeman, formerly of The Gants (who have been described as “Mississippi’s Answer to the Beatles”) will take the stage with only one rule: the same song can not be played more than once per night.

The night will be a fundraiser for MusiCares, a charity established in 1989 by The Recording Academy which “provides a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need.” MusiCares has been known to lend a helping hand to Oxford artists on occasion.

“I’m not going to make a cent,” says Harris, whose main concern in benefiting the musicians. “Any profits will be split evenly among the artists.”

The artists are anticipating a success and several have already willed a Third Annual “A Day In The Life” event by committing to play for next year’s fundraiser.

Tickets are $10 each night.
