Speculators are already saying BYU is going to be at a strong disadvantage in this Mississippi heat. The kickoff is set for 3:45 PM on Saturday, September 3rd. People are saying that this will be one of the toughest climate challenges that BYU will face all year.

Houston Nutt and our Rebels are anxious for a great season as we all are. I’m sure they are looking for a more successful season this year coming off of their 4-8 record last season.

BYU’s Quarterback, Jake Heaps is a young sophomore that Ole Miss will have to contain to ensure BYU stays under control.

Chances are, Ole Miss and the new QB coach David Lee will have Barry Brunetti or Randall Mackey taking the first snap. With the inexperience we may have in the QB position and not too much strength in the Wide Receiver department, there is a big chance that Ole Miss will rely heavily on its running game.

Look for Brandon Bolden and Jeff Scott to get a lot of touches against BYU. You may have to look over the gargantuan offensive line of Ole Miss before you see a streak of Bolden or Scott zip through the middle.

Thanks Peter for the kind introduction. I look forward to being a part of OxfordMississippi.com, a site I’ve enjoyed for a while. Oxford is a special place, and this site has done a great job of pointing out the things that define it. This site actually was the first to cover my project Music in the Hall way back on November 8, 2008, two days after the first show.

Most of my web contribution prior to this (oxfordmusicsnob.com and musicinthehall.com) has been focused on the music of Oxford and the surrounding region, so I look forward to stepping outside those boundaries a bit. My other web project, farmtomenu.com, will now reside here at oxfordmississippi.com/farmtomenu and will be more frequently updated.

We all have our own definitions of what this town is. In my nearly fourteen years here, I’ve discovered Oxford’s amazing depth of talent in so many fields. The town’s authors, poets, filmmakers, artists and musicians have created an artistic mecca that has not only survived the growing pains of a small town in the last couple decades; it has thrived and grown. There are two sides to the coin, so the patrons of the arts in Oxford are to be commended for making it all possible. The variety of grass roots entertainment options in this town would not exist without the support of the community.

One of the things I’ll try to do here is point out instances of others telling the Oxford story well. Below is a clip from Gary Hawkins’ top-notch documentary The Rough South of Larry Brown. It tells the story of my favorite writer, Larry Brown (1951-2004). It’s a story of perseverance and great talent available at Square Books, and online.

If you’re looking for a place to eat flapjacks or a plate lunch and hang with the locals, then I have just the place for you:

The Beacon Restaurant

… a place you can nestle in a worn booth, drink coffee and mingle with the faithful Lions Club members.

On many occasions during the holidays (growing up), my high school friends and I would meet there for a home-cooked breakfast and a little R & R. We’d sit down, reach for the menu (already on the table), and ask for bacon, eggs and coffee – a combination that many Oxonians haven’t seem to let go.

A little history, though…

The Beacon was started by Flem Mize in 1960 and the restaurant has resided in the same spot ever since. The white letters spelling out the restaurants name can still be found on 1200 North Lamar. Although, now, you’ll find his son, Tony Mize, and his mother, Charlene, running the family business.

After walking through the glass doors, you’ll usually see Ms. Charlene behind the counter waiting on pleased customers to pay their fair-priced bill. Tony is normally bussing tables or talking to those that frequent the well-known Beacon. The Southern style food and hearty plate lunches are also a favorite of Ole Miss students along with the frequented locals.

The Beacon is open seven days a week and on any one of those days, a hungry local will find the food is still tasty and the coffee is flowing.

And I’ve even read, on a recent alternate review, the Beacon was awarded ‘Four Grease Stains’. And let me add, four grease stains was their highest rating, and therefore, in that taster’s palette, The Beacon was close to excellence.

Hi folks..

what you see here, is our humble first post on Oxford Mississippi.com…and we’ve got *lots* planned.

Our goal is simple – share all the neat, local insights of Oxford, MS. No stuffy stories. No boring topics. No stale content.

We’re gonna share what never seems to see the light of day. The stories that make Oxford special. The stories that resonate.

And shoot, not just stories… we’ll share recent images of Oxford – how the town is evolving, growing, maturing. Even video uploads too. Why not, you know?

We ain’t English major’s either, so don’t be surprised if you see a lot of comma splices, fragments and mis spellings. You’ll understand what we’re saying – don’t worry : )

We’re very very excited about our new little site here, though, and we’ll be looking for local writers/bloggers very soon as well. (Check out the Write For Us page for more information on contributing)

stay tuned folks, and be sure to subscribe to our RSS feed !
